2016 Music Reviews

Welcome to Music Arts Monthly Magazine
This is an online version that began back in real print in Houston Texas in 1985 by the late Douglas Groover: Editor, Publisher, Musician, Recording Engineer and a true descent person that I for one was very glad to have known. Go ask Cyndi Lauper about Doug as she considered him a true friend as well.

It's from "Source" by Nationwide Disc

When a major artist makes a move that goes against the music industry's trend-from label deals to management changes to album release methods (a la Beyoncé last year)-people tend to sit up and take notice. When that move involves two of the biggest topics in the music industry-Taylor Swift and music streaming-you can bet that everyone is talking about it.
So, what did Taylor do that's so noteworthy? And why should it matter to you?

AL DI MEOLA'S
Elegant Gypsy 40th Anniversary Electric Tour 2017
September 22nd

Al Di Meola's ongoing fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony has been at the heart of his music throughout a celebrated career that has spanned four decades and earned him critical accolades, three gold albums and more than six million in record sales worldwide. A bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll-winner, and prolific composer, he has amassed over 20 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard fanatics who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola's writing along with the soulfulness and the inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.

Detroit Underground

The Detroit Underground was established in 1994, and still has several of its original members. Over the years the band has earned the reputation for being a hard working, high energy, show band. The group features a very solid and funky rhythm section. These four seasoned players provide a solid foundation for the band's "smokin" horns.
Topping it off are California's best male and female lead vocalists. These two high-powered singers will light up the stage, and leave you singing their songs long after you leave the show.
This powerful combination of dedicated musicians gives the band the ability to crank out tunes from artists such as EARTH, WIND, and FIRE, CHAKA KAHN,and STEVIE WONDER. We also play great motown hits and heart-felt ballads.

STEVE WINWOOD

coming to

Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, Indio, CA

September 2nd

For more than five decades, Steve Winwood has remained a primary figure in rock 'n' roll, a respected innovator who has helped to create some of the genre's most celebrated achievements and he's bringing those decades of hits to The Special Events Center at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino on Saturday, September 2, 2017
Steve Winwood burst into prominence in 1963 with the Spencer Davis Group and since that time his celebrated skills as a composer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist have developed an impressive catalog of popular music. The Spencer Davis Group enjoyed a string of chart success by way of such enduring classics as "Keep On Running," "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm A Man". The international success of these singles bolstered Winwood's confidence and strengthened his resolve to seek out new rhythmic possibilities.
In 1969, Winwood became part of what critics called rock's first supergroup, Blind Faith. Blind Faith staples such as "Can't Find My Way Home" with band mates Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker continue to rank among Winwood's finest achievements.
Since the 1977 debut of his solo career, Steve Winwood has given the world a rich catalog of popular songs including "Back In The High Life," "When You See A Chance," "Valerie," and "Higher Love". His most recent solo album, About Time, has continued that success, earning Winwood one of his highest Billboard chart entries. Winwood remains in high demand for special collaborations with other artists. His distinctive Hammond organ has graced such classic fare as Jimi's Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" as well as Miranda Lambert's recent chart hit "Baggage Claim".
While rightfully acknowledged for his many achievements, Steve Winwood forges ahead undaunted, continuing to create and perform new and exciting material. He remains one of the most important and influential artists in all of popular music.

Chubby Checker

September 3rd

Chubby Checker (born Ernest Evans); is an American singer. He is widely known for popularizing the twist dance style, with his 1960 hit cover of Hank Ballard's R&B hit "The Twist". In September 2008 "The Twist" topped Billboard's list of the most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since its debut in 1958, an honor it maintained for an August 2013 update of the list. He also popularized the Limbo Rock and its trademark limbo dance, as well as various dance styles such as the fly.
Despite Checker's initial disapproval, he found follow-up success with a succession of up-tempo dance tracks and produced a series of successful dance-related singles, including "The Hucklebuck" (#14), "The Fly" (#7), "Dance the Mess Around" (#24), and "Pony Time", which became his second #1 single. Checker's follow-up "twist" single, "Let's Twist Again", won the 1961 Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Solo Vocal Performance.

Lita Ford

coming to

September 7th

Lita Rossana Ford is an English-born American rock guitarist, actress, vocalist and songwriter who was the lead guitarist for the Runaways in the late 1970s before embarking on a solo career in the 1980s.
Lita Ford was born to an English father and an Italian mother in London, England. When she was in second grade, she moved with her family to the United States, eventually settling in the Long Beach, California.
In 1975, at age 16, Ford was recruited by recording impresario Kim Fowley to join the all-female rock band he was assembling called the Runaways. The band soon secured a recording contract and released their first album in 1976. The band garnered significant media attention and The Runaways became a successful recording and touring act during their late 1970s heyday. Ford's lead-guitar playing became an integral element of the band's sound until their eventual break-up in April 1979.
In 2016, Ford released the album Time Capsule — a collection of songs she discovered on old analog tapes from the 80s featuring recordings she'd made with Billy Sheehan, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick, Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen, Dave Navarro, Rodger Carter and Jeff Scott Soto.
